Sugar Addiction and Alcoholism: The Brain

Contemporary research has shown that a high number of alcohol-dependent and other drug-dependent people have a preference for sweets, especially for foods with a high sucrose concentration. Moreover, both human and animal studies have demonstrated that in some brains the consumption of foods or drinks high in sugar causes the release of euphoric endorphins and dopamine within the reward center of the brain just like drugs of abuse. The neurobiological pathways of drug and “sugar addiction” involve similar parts and processes of the brain.

Craving, tolerance, and withdrawal have been documented in both human and animal studies. Furthermore, there seems to be similarity between sugar addiction and narcotic dependence in some people. It has also been observed that the children of alcoholic parents, particularly alcoholic fathers, are at greater risk to have a strong sweet preference, and this may an eating disorder for some. In the last two decades research has noted that specific genes may underlie the sweet preference in alcohol- and drug-dependent individuals, as well as in children alcoholic fathers.

Often times, alcoholics who get sober then develop food addiction. Research has shown that when people binge on carbs and sugar, and then restrict their intake, their bodies create a natural opioid. It is released in the body much like the chemicals released when people are doing other narcotics. According to Tennie McCarty, the founder and CEO of the eating disorder treatment center Shades of Hope, “Often we will see addicts switch off from one drug to another, whether that other drug is nicotine or sugar or other foods. Not everyone will take it to the depths that they have taken their primary addiction.”

The PET and CAT scans of food addicts look almost identical to that of alcoholics and drug addicts, showing that sugar creates a physical addiction. In addition, sugar addicts carry the same D2 dopamine receptor, the gene that identifies addiction, as alcoholics and addicts. In those ways, biochemically, food addiction is just like addiction to drugs and alcohol. When we talk to recovering alcoholics and addicts who are finding their way to Overeaters Anonymous, we find a very common refrain: I started using sugar or food just like I was using alcohol.” And in some cases, sugar addiction can be just as harmful as alcoholism. McCarty mentions a man she treated whose addiction to sugar made him sicker than his alcoholism. Her patient was a football player and a Gulf War veteran, and in general, was a healthy, athletic man, but then he started drinking and became an alcoholic.

Sugar Addiction and Alcoholism: One in the Same

Many people who experience sugar addiction report that sugar helps them cope just like alcohol once did. People are searching for something to medicate their feelings and they will continue to do that until they look at what they are using over. It comes down to quality of life. Hangover Movie: Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is a classic hangover movie that every college kid and stoner has seen. It is very much a remake on the very classic Cheech and Chong movies with its ridiculous antics, drug use, sex, and drinking.

Harold Lee and Kumar Patel play the parts of two stoners who end up getting the munchies and decide they want to go to White Castle. Harold is the more introverted awkward character and Kumar is the more outgoing and spontaneous one setting this hangover movie up for some interesting situations. Harold and Kumar’s journey to find a White Castle because of the relocation of the old one; turns into an entire movie.

Harold and Kumar set out to get White Castle and in the process of trying to get some delicious hamburgers to satisfy their munchies, Harold gets bitten by an animal and ends up in the hospital. After getting out of the hospital Harold and Kumar continue their hunt for White Castle and then the car breaks down. After their car breaks down they meet a nice man named Randy who takes them with him to his house to fix their car. At Randy’s house, Randy offers to let Harold and Kumar sleep with his beautiful wife Liane. After this debacle, Harold and Kumar end up picking up a hitch-hiker, who when they stop at a gas station steals their car. So now Harold and Kumar are walking and end up jay walking. After jay walking they get stopped by a police officer who just likes to pick on minorities and ends up arresting Harold and holding him in a cell. Harold and Kumar escape and both run to hid in the bush and come face to face with a cheetah. And the antics go on and on.

Eventually Harold and Kumar find themselves at a raging party that they stop by for a minute and they also in the end make it to White Castle after being up all night losing their car, walking, hitting a party and going through everything they have to get it. While at White Castle the hitchhiker returns the car. And while Harold and Kumar are eating the White Castle it is an epic moment for them because what was supposed to be a quick trip to White Castle had turned into an all-night debacle of sex, drugs, music, and drinking. How to soothe a Food Hangover

Normally when you hear the word hangover you think of alcohol and drinking but believe it or not overeating can cause a food hangover that is almost as harmful as a hangover from drinking. Food hangovers come with symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, and nausea. Food hangovers are hard to soothe but there are some ways you can start to feel better.

Here are some ways to soothe a food hangover:

  • Drink a lot of water. Water is a cure all for any kind of hangover including a food hangover. Drinking liquids will help soothe your food hangover. Water helps flush out the body and relieve constipation which is a common symptom of a food hangover. Tea can also be used to settle an upset stomach and aid in relieving indigestion. Ginger ale is great for an upset stomach that comes along with a food hangover too.
  • Do not, not eat. Overeating the night before and getting a food hangover may cause you to want to starve yourself. Don’t do this! Resist the temptation to starve yourself. Allowing yourself to go hungry can encourage overeating again and this is not the way to sooth a food hangover. What you should do to soothe a food hangover is eat small light meals. These small light meals can include eating things such as fresh fruits, yogurts, and granola throughout the day.
  • If you want to prevent some of the symptoms of a food hangover avoid alcohol, coffee and spicy foods. Foods high in fat can also cause symptoms of a food hangover so avoid foods that are super fatty.
  • Wear loose clothing. If you find yourself wanting to soothe a food hangover then put on something loose fitting around your waist. Wearing something that relieves pressure on the abdomen and fits comfortably can help a lot with the uncomfortable symptoms of a food hangover.

If you find yourself getting food hangovers frequently there are some things you can do to prevent it from happening again. For instance, eat breakfast. Eating breakfast prevents overindulging at lunch and dinner. So eat breakfast around an hour after waking up to help soothe food hangovers in the future.

When you do eat make sure to chew your food thoroughly to help increase your sense of satisfaction with the meal. Chewing slowly will help with overeating and food hangovers. If you chew slowly it will stimulate digestive juices which aid in breaking food down into smaller pieces. This allows your body to absorb the food more easily and can prevent another food hangover.

Exercise if you want to prevent food hangovers! Exercise daily and physical fitness helps to reduce stress and increases positive feelings. Stop overeating and food hangovers by exercising at least 30 minutes a day.

There may be a chance your food hangovers are the symptom of a larger problem. If you find your food hangovers persist it may be best to seek medical attention or talk to your doctor to rule out any other potential causes of your food hangover.
