Hangover Movie: Dude, Where’s My Car

Dude Wheres My Car

“The Hangover” movie series has reigned supreme the last couple years as the ultimate going out, getting wasted and can’t remember what happened movies. The story and plot lines in these movies are not unique in themeselves and have been rehashed over and over again.

A few years ago another hangover movie – Dude, Where’s My Car was another hangover cult classic.

‘Dude, Where’s My car’ premiered in 2000 and was an instant classic for teenagers everywhere who were into the party scene. Probably similar to the same older generation that now enjoys the Hangover movies. The entire plot of dude where’s my car is going to seem very familiar to the hangover movies too that are so popular today.

“Two potheads wake up from a night of partying and can’t remember where they parked their car.” Just like in The Hangover when a group of guys awaken from a hard night of partying and can’t remember what happened.

If you assumed that the rest of this movie plot includes antics and interesting characters on the journey to finding their car again – then you would be right! The main characters are two “potheads” (played by Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott) whom are trying to find their car. This hangover movie begins with a…wait for it… HANGOVER after having a wild party the night before. Ashton and Sean wake up to find the house trashed and people sleeping on the lawn. The unfortunate thing is that they are not in their house they are in their girlfriend’s house which if I may add happens to be hot twins.

Hard night of partying. Check.

Can’t remember what happened. Check.

Hot girls. Check.

Do you see the pattern here?

This movie includes dogs getting stoned, a sexy scene including Kristy Swanson who plays “Christie Boner” and even aliens.

Ashton who plays Jesse and Sean who plays Chester pretty much are idiots and all they know is Jesse’s car is gone and they encounter a transsexual stripper who wants his/her suitcase of stolen money, a group of alien-seeking nerds and an angry street gang. Their girlfriends Wilma and Wanda are upset (for lack of a curse word) that they trashed their house. Mind you the whole time they must find a “continuum transfuctioner” (a mystical device that could either save or destroy the world) while trying to not be duped by a group of jumpsuit-wearing, sexy-as-hell, aliens posing as humans want it.

Sound ridiculous enough? Well it gets more ridiculous.

This movie glorifies smoking pot and getting wasted. In fact I can remember watching this movie as teenager and thinking how badass it all was and how hot Ashton Kutcher was. Truth is eventually you grow up and you realize life is not in the slightest bit like the ridiculous comedic hangover movies they shove in our faces. While this movie is certainly hilarious it’s definitely not productive or filled with tons of brain enhancing or memory boosting scenes.

This hangover movies is slapstick stupid comedy at it its best.

Don’t drink and drive my friends!

Hangover Movie: Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle

Hangover Movie: Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is a classic hangover movie that every college kid and stoner has seen. It is very much a remake on the very classic Cheech and Chong movies with its ridiculous antics, drug use, sex, and drinking.

Harold Lee and Kumar Patel play the parts of two stoners who end up getting the munchies and decide they want to go to White Castle. Harold is the more introverted awkward character and Kumar is the more outgoing and spontaneous one setting this hangover movie up for some interesting situations. Harold and Kumar’s journey to find a White Castle because of the relocation of the old one; turns into an entire movie.

Harold and Kumar set out to get White Castle and in the process of trying to get some delicious hamburgers to satisfy their munchies, Harold gets bitten by an animal and ends up in the hospital. After getting out of the hospital Harold and Kumar continue their hunt for White Castle and then the car breaks down. After their car breaks down they meet a nice man named Randy who takes them with him to his house to fix their car. At Randy’s house, Randy offers to let Harold and Kumar sleep with his beautiful wife Liane. After this debacle, Harold and Kumar end up picking up a hitch-hiker, who when they stop at a gas station steals their car. So now Harold and Kumar are walking and end up jay walking. After jay walking they get stopped by a police officer who just likes to pick on minorities and ends up arresting Harold and holding him in a cell. Harold and Kumar escape and both run to hid in the bush and come face to face with a cheetah. And the antics go on and on.

Eventually Harold and Kumar find themselves at a raging party that they stop by for a minute and they also in the end make it to White Castle after being up all night losing their car, walking, hitting a party and going through everything they have to get it. While at White Castle the hitchhiker returns the car. And while Harold and Kumar are eating the White Castle it is an epic moment for them because what was supposed to be a quick trip to White Castle had turned into an all-night debacle of sex, drugs, music, and drinking. The classic hangover movie: Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.

Hangover Movie: Wedding Crashers

Hangover Movie: Wedding Crashers

Hangover Movie: Wedding Crashers

“Wedding Crashers” is a 2005 movie starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. This comedy dream team worked together previously in “Starsky & Hutch” and “Zoolander”, but “Wedding Crashers” is by far their best team effort.

In this comedy, John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) are divorce mediators in Washington D.C. Naturally, this line of work sours them as to the sanctity of marriage, and these two motor-mouthed conned men spend their free time crashing wedding parties and trying to pick up unaccompanied women. The two work from a set of rules established by a past crasher, Chazz Reinhold (Will Farrell).

In the first half an hour of “Wedding Crashers,” Jeremy and John crash a sequence of weddings and become the hit of every reception. They then begin gearing up for the social event of the year- the wedding for the daughter of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, William Cleary (Christopher Walken). Once inside, the two set their sights on Cleary’s other daughters, Gloria (Isla Fischer) and Claire (Rachel McAdams.) Jeremy ends up sleeping with Gloria on a nearby beach during the reception. Gloria quickly becomes obsessed with Jeremy and claims to have been a virgin until the encounter. Jeremy tries to get John to bail on the reception, but John is busy trying to woo Clair.

John, wanting to spend more time with Claire, convinces Jeremy to accept the family’s invitation to an extended weekend at their family compound. Jeremy agrees reluctantly, not wanting to spend any more time with Gloria. A serious of entertaining event occur at the compound: Jeremy gets hurt during a football game and Gloria tends to him while trying to have sex with him at the same time. John spikes Claire’s fiancé’s drink with eye drops and he gets sick for the rest of the night, allowing him to spend more time with her.  Claire’s mother, Kathleen (Jane Seymour) makes John feel her surgically enhanced breasts.

John and Jeremy’s ruse is eventually discovered by Claire’s fiancé, and they are kicked out of the compound. Jeremy continues to see Gloria secretly and when John finds out, it causes a rift between them. Thoroughly depressed, John begins to crash weddings by himself, often crying or destroying things at the reception and being kicked out. Eventually, he even joins Chazz in crashing a funeral.

“Wedding Crashers” is pretty much a double romantic comedy, plus a “bromance” movie. The first third of the film, where Jeremy and John are crashing weddings, is the most entertaining. They use corny pickup lines and their always the life of the party. “Wedding Crashers” slows a bit when it settles into their serious romantic conflicts. Despite the romances between Jeremy and Gloria and John and Claire, the movie creates a stronger chemistry between the two best buddies than between the buddies and their girlfriends. However, Wilson and Vaughn complement each other nicely, and the cameo by Will Farrell is extremely entertaining. All in all, this is definitely a comedy worth watching.

Hangover Movie: Strange Brew

Hangover Movie Strange Brew

Hangover Movie: Strange Brew

Strange Brew is a Canadian comedy that was made in 1983. Strange Brew stars Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis who were also co-directors of the movie. The majority of the film was shot in Southern Ontario.

The Plot of Hangover Movie: Strange Brew

Two brothers without jobs, Bob and Doug, put a mouse in a beer bottle hoping to blackmail a local beer store so they could get free beer but they are told to take the matter up with the actual brewery instead. After giving the bottle to management at the brewery the brothers are given jobs on the bottling line inspecting bottles for mice.

In the meantime, the evil Brewmeister Smith is planning to take over the world by placing a mind-control drug in his beer. The mind control drug makes the consumer docile but also makes him or her attack others when stimulated by certain musical tones.

Bob and Doug slowly learn that the former owner of the brewery died under mysterious circumstances and that the former owner’s daughter has been given full control of the brewery. While exploring the brewery they discover that it was Brewmeister Smith who murdered the former owner and that the former owner’s brother was involved. Bob and Doug manage to get a floppy disk video of the former owner’s murder by the Brewmeister Smith. Smith catches them and tranquilizes them hoping to frame them for murder, the murder of the former owner’s daughter and a man named Henry Green. Brewmeister smith does this by putting the daughter and Henry in kegs in the van along with Bob and Doug and then sabotages the van to crash into a lake. The van crashes but everyone survives.

Bob and Doug go to trial and the judge rules them insane and puts them under Brewmeister Smith at the asylum. Eventually they escape and find out Brewmeister’s plan. A ghost tells the brothers that Brewmesiter has already shipped a tainted beer to Oktoberfest and the brothers stop the beer from being drunk by going to Oktoberfest.

Throughout the entire movie it is drunken antics and beer. Of course the entire hangover movie is set in a brewery. It is a story of two crazy drunk brothers who eventually end up saving the day. Bob and Doug save the day and as for the contaminated beer they stopped from being handed out at Oktoberfest they haul away and drink it all.

Hangover Movie: Fight Club

Hangover Movie Fight Club

Hangover Movie: Fight Club

Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time. It was released in theaters in 1999, and since then, it has garnered a cult following of epic proportions. Fight Club was one of the most controversial and talked-about films of the 1990s. Some loved it, some hated it, but everyone talked about it.

Fight Club stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Norton plays the unnamed “everyman” protagonist, and the movie starts off with him trying to get relief from his insomnia. His doctor refuses to give him medication and instead directs him to go to a support group, saying “You wanna see pain? Swing by First Methodist Tuesday nights. See the guys with testicular cancer. That’s pain.”

When Norton’s character starts to attend support groups, and is able to fool the other members into thinking that he is a fellow victim. In the groups, he finds an emotional release that relieves his insomnia. He begins to attend more groups, but his insomnia cure stops working when he realizes that there is another faker in the groups-Marla (played by Helena Bonham Carter). Eventually, he negotiates with her so they are never in the same group.

On a business trip, Norton’s character meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). When he returns home from the trip and finds that there was an explosion that destroyed his apartment, he calls Tyler. The two meet for a beer and Norton’s character ends up moving into Durden’s rundown, filthy house.  That same night, Durden invites Norton’s character to hit him, and the two get into a fistfight outside the bar. They continue to fight in the parking lot, and eventually attract a group of men. The group ends up forming a “fight club” in the basement of the bar.

One night, Marla calls Norton’s character saying she has overdosed on pills. Norton’s character sets the phone down, and Durden picks it up. The two start up a sexual relationship. Under Tyler’s direction, the guys in the fight club become the anti-materialist and anti-corporate organization called “Project Mayhem”.

I won’t ruin the ending for those who haven’t seen it, but suffice it to say that what follows is a mind bending series of events that calls into question morality, anti-establishment dogma, and nihilism as a lifestyle. Norton’s character tries to change his life by becoming free of the corporate and societal obligations that weigh him down. The violence is portrayed as a way for 30-somethings to feel in a society where they are otherwise numb. Fight Club plays on the frustration that is common in the “lost” generation, generation X. As Tyler Durden puts it:

“I see all this potential, and I see squandered. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.”

Hangover Movie: Old School

Hangover Movie - Will Ferrell

Hangover Movie: Old School

Parties, drinking, and college life is the back drop for the Hangover Movie, “Old School”. Only difference between this college life and reality is that the main characters are well out of college and much older. Old school stars Luke Wilson as Mitch Martin, Juliette Lewis as Heidi, Vince Vaughn as Bernard and Will Ferrell as Franks.

The movie begins with Mitch, Luke Wilson, breaking up with his girlfriend. In the midst of this breakup he goes house hunting and finds a house located near the campus of the fictional school Harrison University. The first big party of scene of this hangover movie is thrown by Mitch’s friends Bernard and Frank (Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell). Frank ends up streaking through the neighborhood and Mitch ends up making a fool of himself in front of an old friend Nicole (Ellen Pompeo).

When Mitch wakes up from this party he realizes that he slept with an underage girl who is played by Elisha Cuthbert. Soon after Mitch gets himself together he meets the dean of students at the college who is onto Mitch and his friend’s antics. So Mitch makes the house he is living in a fraternity for the college. From this point forward it is just a mess of drunken parties, failing marriages, and hilarious jokes. Eventually the dean tries to revoke the fraternity’s charter. Towards the end of the movie the dean’s attempt to get rid of Mitch and his friends fails because he ends up getting fired due to a bribery scandal.

In the end everything works out and Mitch ends up with the girl from the very beginning, Nicole. Mitch and Bernard leave the fraternity they started and Frank who has now lost his marriage due to his incessant drinking decides to stay on as an authority figure for the fraternity.

College is the place for parties and this is one of the classic stories of college binge drinking. It is almost socially acceptable to be binge drinking in college and this is a perfect example of it. Except the men in this movie are older, are married, and have kids. It shows the consequences due to drinking but it also is one of the slapstick funny comedies that only Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughan, and Luke Wilson could do. This is the perfect example of drunken nights, crazy antics, and their consequences.

Hangover Movie: Dazed and Confused

Hangover Movie Dazed and Confused

Hangover Movie: Dazed and Confused

Dazed and Confused premiered in theaters on 1993. The film features a large ensemble cast of actors including Matthew McConaughey, Jason London, Ben Affleck, Mila Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey, Adam Goldberg, Joey Lauren Adams, Nicky Katt, and Rory Cochrane.

Dazed and Confused opens at a Texas suburban high school in 1976 on the last day of school. The future seniors are getting ready to haze the incoming freshmen. Also, the star of the football team, Randall Floyd, is asked to sign a pledge not to take drugs over the summer or do anything that would look bad for the school.

The seniors haze the freshman boys by catching them and spanking them with wooden paddles that are made especially for the occasion.  Freshman Mitch Kramer escapes the hazing when Carl’s mom pulls a shotgun on senior Fred O’Bannion (played by Ben Affleck), but he is later cornered at his baseball game, and violently paddled.

The freshman girls are hazed too, but their hazing consists more of humiliation than physical punishment. They are rounded up in the school parking lot by the senior girls, who cover them in flour, ketchup and raw eggs. The girls then are put in dog collars and are led over to senior boys and told to propose to them.

Later, everyone starts gearing up for a big party at senior Kevin Pickford’s house. Plans are foiled when Kevin gets a keg delivered before his parents are even at the door. Instead, students loiter around the Emporium, listen to rock music, cruise the neighborhood and stop at the hamburger drive-in. Eventually, they all meet up at an impromptu keg party at in a field under the moon tower. Mitch Kramer smokes pot and drinks for the first time.

Towards the end of the night, Floyd goes to the football field with a bunch of friends to smoke pot on the fifty yard line. They are caught by local police and the football coach who lectures Floyd about hanging out with losers. The coach again pressures Floyd to sign the pledge. Floyd says he may play football, but again refuses to sign the pledge. Mitch Kramer stumbles into his house at dawn, and his mother warns him against coming home that late again.

Dazed and Confused was well received by critics, but its original earnings at the box office were somewhat disappointing. However, the movie later became a cult movie classic and made a lot of money through the sale of DVDs.

Dazed and Confused isn’t really about anything. There’s no serious plot line. It’s basically just a comedy; a coming of age film. It’s more like a party movie, and there isn’t much structure. It’s more like an anthropological look at these uniquely American rites of passage. The movie has been praised for its reflection of American culture and its eclectic soundtrack. If you haven’t seen Dazed and Confused, I would highly recommend it. This is one of the funniest movies to come out in the last 20 years.

Hangover Movie: Bad Santa

Hangover Movie: Bad Santa

Hangover Movie: Bad Santa

Bad Santa is an American Christmas crime comedy. It stars Billy Bob Thornton, Bernie Mac, and Lauren Graham.

The movie starts off with the main character Willie Stokes, played by Thornton. Every year Willie Stokes finds a different job at shopping malls to dress up as Santa. Supposedly Willie Stokes is a jolly old man whom all the kids love. This isn’t the case though. On Christmas Eve, Willie and his friend Marcus the ‘elf’ will disarm the alarms in the shopping mall and then rob the store blind. Willie then spends the rest of his year getting drunk and committing other crimes waiting for next Christmas where he will find a shopping mall where he can dress up as Santa and then rob them again. The following Christmas Willie and Marcus meet up once again to rob a mall in Phoenix, Arizona and during that time Willie meets a bartender named Sue.

Meant to be funny and full of insult and Christmas humor, Bad Santa really is bad. During Willie’s shift work as Santa, Willie finds a quiet, fat boy named Thurman. One night when Willie is getting off work he gets attacked by a strange man and Thurman ends up helping Willie. Willie drives Thurman home and then realizes that Thurman lives in an expensive house with only his grandmother so Willie manages to talk Thurman into letting him rob the house and take the expensive car in the driveway.

Eventually at his job at the mall as Santa a security guard starts to pick up on Willie’s antics. The security guard, Gin Slagel played by Bernie Mac then decides to break into Willie’s house to search for any evidence he can find to get Willie fired.  The movie continues on with Willie and Sue’s relationship and Willie is now living with Thurman. The security guard eventually figures out that Thurman’s father is actually in prison for embezzlement and decides to pay him a visit. When he goes to visit Thurman’s father he realizes that Willie should not be staying at Thurman’s house and from that point on it is the end of Willie’s robbery days.

On Christmas Eve, Willie, Marcus and Lois break into the mall and disarm the alarms. It takes Willie longer than usual to crack open the safe; Marcus notices this and after successfully opening it, Marcus reveals to Willie that he is becoming too unreliable and was planning on killing him. Before Marcus could take his shot, a police squad appears and starts shooting at all three of them. Willie makes an escape, but manages to snag a pink stuffed elephant as Thurman’s Christmas present. He escapes and drives back to Thurman’s house with a convoy of policeman behind him. However, while trying to get to the front door, the police shoot him down.

The epilogue of the movies is told from a letter Willie wrote to Thurman from the hospital explaining his innocence. In the end Marcus and Lois are arrested and Sue gets custody of Thurman and Willie ends up being a sensitivity security guard.

Love and other drugs

Hangover Movie: Love and Other Drugs

And of course there is an ending that fits right in with the romantic cliché’. Something bad happens they split up and then have to go chasing each other down again.

The film is blended well with both comedy and drama as Jamie’s slob geek overweight brother Josh(Josh Gad) provides laughs trying to score and it’s fun seeing he’s addicted to watching internet porn and sex tapes. Plus the scene of Jamie’s boner from taking the Viagra pill was downright funny. Still Maggie is a serious go getter by traveling even to Canada to Parkinson support groups in the search for new cures and ways of living with the disease.

Either way you look at it Love and Other drugs is a great movie that is different than most romantic comedies. It’s real, funny, witty, and sad at times.

Hangover Movie: Limitless

Hangover Movie: Limitless

Hangover Movie: Limitless

Limitless is a 2011 thriller starring Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, and Abbie Cornish. Limitless is actually based on the novel The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn. You may think of the movie Limitless and wonder how it is hangover story but alas it is one of the greatest movies out there about drug addiction and parallels many of today’s most popular drug topics; for instance, the usage of Adderall in college students to max out their potential.

Limitless follows a similar story of a New York City author who comes across what is known as a nootropic drug to access 100% of his brain instead of the usual 20%. When Bradley Cooper’s character, Eddie, finds out that the drug really does work he is suddenly able to work and do things he was never capable of doing before. At the beginning of Limitless, Eddie is struggling to beat a deadline for the book he is working on. With the drug known as NZT-48 in the movie he is able to quickly and easily finish his book. Not just that but as he continues to take the drug, he realizes he can identify trends in the stock market and quadruple his investments. He begins to build a fortune very quickly.  And his success really takes off due to taking the drug.

Eddie is literally Limitless. There is nothing he can’t do and can’t do well. Only problem is having a continuous supply of the drug NZT. When he doesn’t have the drug after a long period of building success by taking NZT he begins to feel side effects. NZT has severe side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, and that is only the beginning. Eddie eventually meets a woman who was on the drug for a long time and then stopped and finds her sluggish, lazy, aged, and overall useless since she stopped taking the drug. That is one of the more permanent effects of activating 100% of her brain for so long of a time. Instead of stopping the use of NZT, Eddie continues to take the drug to keep from getting sick, keep up appearances, and keep his success rolling in. In fact with his new found wealth Eddie goes so far as to hire laboratories to reverse engineer the drug NZT so he can have an endless supply of it.

Eddie’s consequences due to his drug use start piling up. Not only does he have people searching for him (like the mafia, gangster, and crime bosses) but he gets involved with a murder but is let off because he is not recognized by the witness. Everything Eddie does is a lie because it is the drug NZT that is making him capable not himself. Eventually what he has done during his drug use starts to catch up with him. He loses his supply of NZT that he had and the crime bosses find him and try to kill him. It is at this point that Eddie decides he should stop the use of NZT but he has to find a way to avoid the permanent side effects of stopping its use. So he weans himself off by retaining acute mental abilities therefore making the effects permanent and has an endless supply due to his laboratories. Eddie remains wealthy and his book that he wrote becomes a success. According to the movie Eddie’s life continues on smoothly but this is after an absolute train wreck of murder, lies, stealing, manipulation, and chaos. One of the prices we all pay for taking drugs to heighten our performance in anyway is deterioration in our health and our lives.

This is very similar to those who take drugs to help them in school and work. They feel the toll and while their story may not be the same kind of success as Eddie, nor is the drug the same, nor will their story end as well-it goes to show there is a high price to pay for taking a substance in order to perform better.
